I wanted to add a starfield behind my model but couldn’t find a High Dynamic Range file, that I liked, to use as the background image.
I wanted to have something that looks like the night sky: a few, faint stars, a single pixel each. The files that I found online had far too many stars, and they all tended to be the same brightness.
In the end I cloned OpenEXR from GitHub , built it, and used that to create a program to generate a small number of random stars.
The generated exr file is 951 Kb on disk but is an 8K image with 200 stars. Thank goodness my graphics card has enough ram.
